Common Causes of Clogged Drains

01

Hair Build-up

Hair is one of the primary culprits of clogged drains, especially in bathrooms. Over time, hair can accumulate and form blockages, impeding water flow.

02

Grease and Fat

Pouring grease or fat down the kitchen sink is a common mistake. As these substances cool, they solidify and stick to the inside of pipes, leading to stubborn clogs.

03

Food Waste

Food particles, especially those that are fibrous or starchy, can easily get caught in the drain and create blockages. Avoid disposing of large amounts of food waste in the sink.

04

Soap Scum and Mineral Build-up

Soap scum and mineral deposits can accumulate on the walls of pipes, reducing the diameter and causing slow drainage over time.

Practical Solutions for Clogged Drains

Plunger

A plunger is a handy tool for clearing many clogs. Create a tight seal around the drain and vigorously plunge up and down to dislodge the obstruction.

Drain Snake

A drain snake, also known as a plumber's auger, is effective for more stubborn clogs. Insert the snake into the drain and rotate it to break the blockage.

Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners can help dissolve clogs, but use them sparingly and according to the manufacturer's instructions. Overuse may damage pipes.

Professional Plumbing Services

If DIY methods don't solve the issue or deal with frequent clogs, it's best to call professional plumbers like Larry Stinson Plumbing. They have the skills and equipment to tackle even the most stubborn clogs without causing further damage.

Preventing Clogged Drains

By understanding the causes, you can keep your drains clear and avoid the inconvenience and expense of clogs. Larry Stinson Plumbing is just a phone call away if you need professional assistance!

Use Drain Covers

Install drain covers or strainers to catch hair, food particles, and other debris before they enter the drain.

Dispose of Grease Properly

Instead of pouring grease down the sink, allow it to cool and solidify, scrape it into a sealable container, and dispose of it in the trash.

Regular Maintenance

Regularly flush drains with hot water and baking soda or vinegar to help prevent mineral buildup and keep drains flowing freely.

Be Mindful of What Goes Down the Drain

Avoid putting coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous materials, and non-flushable items down the drain.

When Should I Call A Professional Plumber?

Knowing when to call a plumber for clogged drains can help prevent further damage and ensure timely resolution. Here are some situations that indicate it’s time to call Larry Stinson Plumbing:

Multiple Drains Clogged

If multiple drains in your home, such as sinks, showers, or toilets, are experiencing clogs simultaneously, it could indicate a more significant issue within the plumbing system. In this case, it’s best to call a plumber.

Persistent Clogs

If you’ve tried DIY methods such as plunging or using drain cleaners, but the clogs persist or keep recurring, it’s a sign that an underlying issue may require professional attention.

Slow-Draining Fixtures

When sinks, tubs, or showers drain slower than usual, it could indicate a partial clog in the pipes. If simple cleaning methods don’t resolve the issue, it’s advisable to consult a plumber.

Foul Odors

Foul odors emanating from drains can suggest a buildup of debris, food particles, or stagnant water. A plumber can diagnose the cause of the odor and address the underlying problem.

Backed-Up Sewage

If sewage starts backing up into drains or toilets, it’s crucial to call a plumber immediately. That can indicate a sewer line blockage or a more severe plumbing issue that requires professional expertise.

Frequently asked questions about clogged drains Service

While chemical drain cleaners can sometimes temporarily relieve minor clogs, they are not recommended for frequent or stubborn clogs. These cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can damage your pipes over time. It's best to consult a professional plumber to assess the situation and provide appropriate solutions.

Preventing clogged drains starts with being mindful of what goes down the drain. Avoid dumping food scraps, grease, coffee grounds, and non-flushable items down sinks or toilets. Use drain covers to catch hair and debris, and regularly flush drains with hot water and baking soda or vinegar to help keep them clear.

You can attempt some DIY methods to clear minor clogs. Plunging the affected drain, using a drain snake, or pouring a mixture of hot water and dish soap down the drain can sometimes dislodge minor blockages. However, seeking professional assistance is best if the clog persists or worsens.

The time required to clear a clogged drain depends on various factors, such as the severity and location of the clog, accessibility, and the specific methods used by the plumber. Professional plumbers often resolve common clogs within an hour or two, but complex or stubborn clogs may take longer.

When handled correctly by a skilled plumber, unclogging a drain should not cause damage to your pipes. Plumbers use specialized tools and techniques to safely remove blockages without harming the plumbing system. However, if you attempt DIY methods without proper knowledge, you may unintentionally cause damage. It's best to leave clog removal to experienced professionals.

Terrific communication - I worked with Corey, mainly. Everyone was friendly and joking while staying focused on the job I called them out to get help with (they didn't try to tack on extra jobs). Corey listened attentively, used what I said to assess the problem. Checked everything out, gave me a quote. Came out and did the job in a few hours and the cost was what he quoted. Showed some possible issues down the line but didn't pretend the issues were imminent to frighten us into having the work done immediately. It's tough to find people you can trust for things like this, and I wouldn't hesitate to have them work on my house again.
